Background

By developing education material and a book to directly address the human rights issues on the Faroe Islands, which are often ignored or forgotten in the public debate. The interactive activities in the book will help young people form their own opinion on human rights issues – independently from their parents’ opinions – and thereby encourage them to participate in the human rights discussion.

How the Funding Was Used

This project provided educational material on human rights in Faroes

How They Made A Difference

This project has enabled every 8. and 9. graders on the Faroe Islands to have a free copy of the book. This is paramount to me as it means that the young person’s education on human rights is not dependent on the financial situation of its parents.

After receiving the funding from GoMakeADifference, I have worked closely with Nám (a company providing educational material as a division under the Ministry of Education) to develop my book. For example, I have written a teacher’s guide to make it as straightforward as possible for teachers to use the book as a part of their education. The guide explains how the book can be used as a part of the curriculum in social sciences and includes activities the students can do by using the book.

Looking back in hindsight, the order in which I took the different steps was paramount, as it allowed me to develop my pitch and thereby get the funding needed for the project. I started by participating in the courses of The Changemaker Project (an organisation that supports young people in developing their own projects) and through that started up my project, got feedback on my pitch, and attended meetings with sponsors, through which I got funding for my project. When I then wrote my project report to GoMakeADifference x UWC initiative, I was able to put into practice the pitching skills I had developed from the Changemaker Project’s mentor-sessions. Furthermore, when the GoMakeADifference administration wrote back to me with additional questions about my project, I got to know more about what information funders are looking for when deciding whether or not to invest. This knowledge as well as the funding from GoMakeADifference was crucial for me when I contacted the company Nám (a division under the Ministry of Education providing educational material) as it was a reassurance to them that someone else was supporting my project. Furthermore, I have written the press release, which will be published when the books are distributed to the different schools. This allows parents to understand what their children are reading, and why it is important to learn about human rights.
